TL;DR: A commercial auto policy has four sections: Covered Autos (which vehicles, using symbols 1-9), Liability Coverage (pays others' damages), Physical Damage (covers your vehicles), and Conditions (rules for coverage). Endorsements modify the base policy; the dec page summarizes everything.

The Structure of a Commercial Auto Policy

A commercial auto policy is built on a standard form (typically the ISO Business Auto Coverage Form, CA 00 01) that is modified with endorsements for your specific business. Understanding the structure helps you identify coverage gaps and communicate more effectively with your broker.

Section I: Covered Autos

This section defines which vehicles are covered using numeric symbols:

  • Symbol 1 (Any Auto): Covers any vehicle, owned or not. Broadest coverage.
  • Symbol 2 (Owned Autos Only): Covers only vehicles you own that are listed on the policy.
  • Symbol 7 (Specifically Described Autos): Covers only vehicles specifically listed by VIN on the policy.
  • Symbol 8 (Hired Autos): Covers vehicles you rent, lease, or borrow for business use.
  • Symbol 9 (Non-Owned Autos): Covers vehicles owned by others (employees) when used for your business.

Most commercial auto policies use Symbol 7 for physical damage (covering specific listed vehicles) and Symbols 8+9 for hired and non-owned auto liability.

Section II: Liability Coverage

Covers your legal obligation to pay for bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. This is the core of your policy and responds to lawsuits, medical bills, and property repair costs. See our liability limits guide for choosing the right amount.

Section III: Physical Damage Coverage

Covers damage to your own vehicles. Two parts:

  • Collision: Damage from collisions with other vehicles or objects. Subject to deductible.
  • Comprehensive (Other Than Collision): Theft, vandalism, weather damage, fire, falling objects, animal strikes. Subject to separate deductible.

See our deductibles guide for choosing the right amounts.

Section IV: Conditions

The rules you must follow for coverage to apply. Key conditions include:

  • Duty to report: You must notify your insurer promptly after an accident or claim.
  • Cooperation: You must cooperate with the insurer's investigation and defense.
  • Other insurance: Defines how your policy interacts with other coverage that may apply.
  • Transfer of rights: After paying a claim, the insurer can pursue the at-fault party (subrogation).

The Declarations Page (Dec Page)

The dec page is the summary of your policy. It lists: your business name, policy number, effective dates, covered vehicles (with VINs), drivers, coverage limits, deductibles, and total premium. Review your dec page carefully at every renewal to make sure all vehicles and drivers are correct.

Endorsements

Endorsements modify the base policy. They can add coverage (like HNOA or motor truck cargo), restrict coverage (like named driver exclusions), or change terms (like extending the coverage territory). See our full endorsements guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main sections of a commercial auto policy?
A commercial auto policy has four main sections: Covered Autos (which vehicles are insured), Liability Coverage (pays for damage you cause to others), Physical Damage (covers damage to your own vehicles), and Conditions (rules for coverage to apply). Plus endorsements that modify the base policy and a declarations page that summarizes everything.
What are auto symbols on my commercial auto policy?
Auto symbols are numbers (1-9) that define which vehicles are covered under each section of your policy. Symbol 1 means any auto (broadest), Symbol 7 means specifically listed vehicles, Symbol 8 means hired autos, and Symbol 9 means non-owned autos. The symbols used determine the scope of your coverage.
What is a declarations page?
The declarations page (dec page) is the summary page of your policy listing your business name, policy number, effective dates, all covered vehicles with VINs, named drivers, coverage limits, deductibles, and total premium. It is the first place to check when reviewing your policy and should be verified at every renewal.
What is the difference between collision and comprehensive coverage?
Collision covers damage to your vehicle from collisions with other vehicles or objects (accidents). Comprehensive covers non-collision events: theft, vandalism, weather damage, fire, falling objects, and animal strikes. Both are optional and subject to separate deductibles. Together they are called physical damage coverage.
