TL;DR: Commercial auto endorsements add, remove, or change coverage on your base policy. Essential endorsements include HNOA, blanket additional insured, blanket waiver of subrogation, and motor truck cargo. Understanding which endorsements you have determines what is covered when you file a claim.

What Are Commercial Auto Endorsements?

Endorsements (also called riders) are modifications to your base commercial auto policy that add, remove, or change coverage. Your base policy provides standard liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. Endorsements customize that base policy to match your specific business needs.

Some endorsements add coverage (like hired and non-owned auto). Others restrict it (like named driver exclusions). Understanding which endorsements are on your policy is critical because they directly affect what is and is not covered when you file a claim.

Coverage-Expanding Endorsements

Hired and Non-Owned Auto (HNOA)

Covers liability when employees drive rented or personal vehicles for business. Essential for any business where employees might rent a car, drive to the office supply store, or use their own vehicle for a work errand. Cost: $150-$500/year. Full HNOA guide.

Broad Form Named Insured

Extends coverage to any vehicle owned by the named insured, even if not specifically listed on the policy. Useful for businesses that frequently acquire and dispose of vehicles. This endorsement varies by carrier; some include it automatically, others charge extra.

Drive Other Car (DOC)

Provides coverage for named individuals (usually business owners) when driving non-owned vehicles for personal use. Since your personal auto policy may exclude coverage if you are listed on a commercial policy, DOC fills that gap.

Blanket Additional Insured

Automatically adds any party required by written contract as an additional insured on your policy. Without this, you need to request a separate endorsement each time a general contractor or client requires additional insured status. For subcontractors, this endorsement saves significant time and broker fees.

Blanket Waiver of Subrogation

Waives your insurer's right to recover claim payments from third parties when required by written contract. Many general contractors require this in their subcontractor agreements. Like blanket additional insured, the blanket version saves you from requesting individual waivers for each contract.

Motor Truck Cargo

Covers goods you transport for others. Required for for-hire carriers and recommended for any business that hauls customer property. Coverage limits typically range from $25,000 to $250,000. Full cargo insurance guide.

Trailer Interchange

Covers physical damage to trailers you pull but do not own, typically under a trailer interchange agreement with another carrier or shipper. Without this endorsement, borrowed or interchanged trailers have no physical damage coverage on your policy.

Pollution Liability

Standard commercial auto policies exclude pollution-related claims. If your vehicle transports chemicals, fuel, fertilizer, or other potentially hazardous materials, a pollution liability endorsement covers cleanup costs and third-party bodily injury from spills or leaks during transport.

Coverage-Restricting Endorsements

Named Driver Exclusion

Removes specific drivers from coverage. If a driver on your policy has a poor MVR and is driving up your premium, excluding them reduces your rate. However, if the excluded driver operates your vehicle and causes an accident, there is zero coverage. Use with extreme caution.

Radius Limitation

Restricts coverage to a defined geographic radius (e.g., 50 miles, 150 miles). Operating outside the stated radius could result in a denied claim. Make sure your stated radius matches your actual operations, including occasional long trips.

How to Know Which Endorsements You Need

The right endorsements depend on your industry, contracts, vehicles, and operations. At a minimum, most NY businesses should carry:

  • Hired and Non-Owned Auto (if any employee ever drives a personal or rented vehicle for work)
  • Blanket Additional Insured (if you work as a subcontractor)
  • Blanket Waiver of Subrogation (if your contracts require it)
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (required in NY)

Beyond those, your broker should review your operations and contracts to recommend additional endorsements. FHIA does this as part of every policy review at no extra charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a commercial auto endorsement?
An endorsement is a modification to your base commercial auto policy that adds, removes, or changes coverage. Endorsements customize your policy to match your specific business needs. They can expand coverage (like adding hired and non-owned auto) or restrict it (like a named driver exclusion).
How much do commercial auto endorsements cost?
Costs vary widely by endorsement. HNOA typically costs $150-$500/year. Blanket additional insured and waiver of subrogation are often included at no charge or for $50-$150/year. Motor truck cargo can range from $500-$3,000/year depending on limits. Pollution liability endorsements typically run $200-$1,000/year.
What endorsements do subcontractors need?
Subcontractors typically need: Blanket Additional Insured (so GCs are automatically covered), Blanket Waiver of Subrogation (required by most GC contracts), HNOA (if employees ever drive personal vehicles to job sites), and adequate liability limits (usually $1M CSL minimum per contract requirements).
Can I add endorsements mid-policy?
Yes. Most endorsements can be added at any time during your policy term. Your broker submits an endorsement request to the carrier, and it is typically processed within 1-3 business days. Premium adjustments are prorated for the remaining policy term.
What is the difference between blanket and scheduled additional insured?
A blanket additional insured endorsement automatically covers any party required by written contract. A scheduled endorsement lists specific parties by name. Blanket is more convenient and cost-effective for businesses with multiple contracts, since you do not need to request a new endorsement for each client or GC.
What is a named driver exclusion?
A named driver exclusion removes a specific person from your commercial auto coverage. If that person drives your vehicle and causes an accident, there is no coverage. Carriers sometimes offer this as an alternative to non-renewal when a driver has a problematic MVR. Use it only as a last resort and ensure the excluded driver never operates your vehicles.
